At over 200 pages this book covers a great deal of ground and each page is made up of carefully chosen words and lots of illustrations.

The subject matter is all art, so a large number of media are covered.

The range of supports available to work on from papers to canvas and boards are all explained.

The drawing materials covered range from pencil to pen and ink and conte to markers.

There are sections on watercolours, oils, acrylics and gouache to name but a few.

Using the watercolour section as an example the paints are explained and a suggestion is made of an 8 colour basic palette. A further 7 colours are suggested as an auxiliary palette for when you want to extend. Their properties are explained.

Brushes are explained from their ingredients and how they are made to their shapes and sizes and what they are used for.

Then is the turn of palettes, those available on the market are discussed and suggestions are made of how to improvise.

Accessories come next with all the different mediums you can add to watercolour as well as masking fluid, sponges and other tools.

Then we get to the techniques section – Washes, wet-in-wet, wet-on-dry. How to add highlights and texture

The choice of available subject matter from still life to the human form and through to landscape are described and points to bear in mind for each are talked about. Lots of examples are provided.

Colour is covered in some depth as are composition, drawing and observation.

How to organise your studio space, protecting your artwork, mounts and frames follow.

There is a reference section at the end which covers such things as health and safety.

A very worthwhile addition to any artist’s bookshelf
